Overview
This project involved developing an intelligent cargo stowage optimization system for the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The system helps maximize space utilization in spacecraft cargo modules while considering various constraints like weight distribution, accessibility, and safety requirements.
The Challenge
Space missions have strict limitations on cargo capacity. Every cubic centimeter matters when you’re launching materials into orbit. The traditional approach to cargo planning was manual and time-consuming, often resulting in suboptimal space utilization.
Solution
We developed an algorithmic solution that:
- Analyzes cargo dimensions and constraints
- Optimizes placement using advanced bin-packing algorithms
- Considers weight distribution for balanced loading
- Provides 3D visualization of the stowage plan
Results
The system achieved a 15% improvement in space utilization compared to manual planning methods, potentially saving significant costs per mission.
